Natural Therapies for Hot Flushes

by Patsy Hamilton

Of all the natural therapies for hot flushes that have been studied and evaluated for safety and effectiveness, black cohosh appears to be the best. When you think of remedies for hot flushes in the menopause phase of a womans life, you may immediately think of herbs and other supplements that can relieve them, but there are lifestyle and dietary changes that can reduce their frequency and severity.

Most women experience hot flushes around the time of menopause. Some women experience them several years before menstruation actually ends. And, some have them for years afterward. Menopause is the time in a womans life when there are no more eggs in the ovaries. At this time the ovaries stop producing estrogen and the lower levels of estrogen are believed to cause hot flushes. The heat usually starts in the chest, works its way up the neck to the face and head. Sweat may pop out on the forehead.

According to some studies, the majority of women do not feel that they have a major impact on their quality of life, but, undoubtedly, many women would disagree. Since the health risks associated with hormone replacement therapy have become well known, more and more women are seeking natural therapies for hot flushes.

When they happen at night, a woman may wake up with a pool of sweat on her chest, finding the bed linens wet. Once the heat goes away, she often feels chilled. Hands and feet are sometimes cold, while the chest, neck and face are hot. Hot flushes that occur at night are often referred to as night sweats. They can affect the quality of a womans sleep, sometimes leading to insomnia. One of the remedies for hot flushes in the menopause is to sleep in a cool room, using a fan and light weight blankets; wearing light cotton clothing and keeping an extra blanket nearby, in case of a chill.

The popularity of natural therapies for hot flushes that include herbs and plant components has some doctors and researchers concerned about safety issues related to long term use of herbs. Most herbalists separate plants into three groups; those that are common food items or commonly used to flavor food, those that are strictly used for medicinal purposes and those that are dangerous, poisonous and not safe for human consumption. The herbal and botanical remedies for hot flushes in the menopause that have been used historically by native healers and are commonly used today belong to the first and second groups.

Traditional healers tested plants by ingesting them or learned about their poisonous affects by treating others who had ingested them. Modern day scientists test plant components first on cell lines in a laboratory setting, then on animals and finally on people if relative safety has been established. These are the same trials that newly designed synthetic medications must pass, before being marketed. When it comes to new medicines, the safety of long-term use cannot be readily established and many drugs are released and then removed from the market, because of safety concerns. When it comes to herbal remedies for hot flushes in the menopause, the safety of long-term use has been established by historical use, but for those who are still unsure, we can consult the scientists.

Of all of the herbal remedies for hot flushes in the menopause that have currently been evaluated, black cohosh appears to be the safest and most effective. However, certain lifestyle and dietary factors can interfere with its effectiveness. Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and spicy foods can all trigger hot flushes. One of the natural therapies for hot flushes, commonly recommended by other women, is regular exercise. If you are sedentary and you smoke, drink coffee and alcohol on a regular basis, natural therapies for hot flushes may not be effective.

Male Menopause

by Kevin Stith

Male menopause is the result of decreased levels of the male hormone, testosterone. Most commonly, reduced testosterone is reported by those suffering from underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity or high blood pressure. These diseases are common in men over the age of 45.

While some reduction in testosterone levels occurs normally as men age, there are several conditions in which there may be a more rapid decrease. Testosterone production can be interrupted at any age through damage to the testes. The testes make testosterone, and they may be damaged due to an injury, surgery, radiation, infection, or chemotherapy. Testosterone production is mediated by parts of the brain called the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. So if either or both are damaged or not working properly at any age, they do not send the signals required for normal testosterone production to the testes, resulting in reduced testosterone levels.

When testosterone levels drop, men may experience symptoms similar to what women experience when going through menopause. These symptoms include reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, depression, fatigue, and muscle weakness. Testosterone deficiency has also been linked to osteoporosis in men.

Significant testosterone deficiency can be treated with hormone replacement therapy. However, most men experience a very gradual reduction in testosterone levels as they get older, and do not require any treatment. Also, hormone replacement therapy carries an increased risk of prostate cancer, and should be carefully considered. If a decision is made to undergo hormone therapy, the treatment can be administered through injections, oral medications, implants and patches. To treat symptoms such as depression, doctors may prescribe anti-depressants. Because obesity is a major factor implicated in testosterone deficiency, a doctor may also recommend certain lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Menopause provides detailed information about menopause, early menopause, male menopause, menopause and osteoporosis and more. Menopause is the sister site of Chronic Insomnia.

Diabetes and Menopause

by Sathya Mohan

You might be thinking what is the connection between diabetes and the menopause? Well, for ladies reaching that certain age, it can be very traumic. Menopause is not necessarily a negative experience. It is sometimes called a "change of life" as there are a lot of changes going on in a woman's body, both as menopause approaches and afterwards.

The menopause marks an important transition into the last third of a woman's life. It gives the woman and her health professionals an opportunity to review health risks, plan preventive activities, and establish monitoring strategies. This is especially important in women with diabetes because of the compounding menopausal cardiovascular risk and those associated with diabetes. The importance of the menopause is often not appreciated by women with diabetes, nor by their health professionals, and opportunities to avoid future problems may be missed.

Menopause is a natural process that women go through as the child-bearing years come to an end and the ovaries cease to release eggs every month. Menopause is usually defined as the point when periods stop. Menopause is not an event, but a slow process, often lasting up to 10 years. It starts during the age of 40s (sometime late 30s) and the average age for most women to have their last period is 51, where the female sex hormones hormones, estrogen and progesterone, begin to decline.

How menopause affects diabetes

As you approach menopause, ovaries gradually stop producing the hormone estrogen and progesterone. Both of these hormones affect insulin which is the hormone produced by the pancreas that deliver glucose which is life sustaing to every cell in the body.

Decrease levels of estrogen and progesterone can:

Increase the blood sugar. This will be mostly during perimenopause where the body may become more resistant to insulin and this causes blood sugar level to rise.

Decrease the blood sugar. This will be during the time when you reach menopause. Where the levels of estrogen and progesterone decline permanently. Where the body may regain its sensitivity to insulin, which causes blood sugar levels to fall.

The hormone fluctuations that characterize menopause may wreak havoc on the hard-earned blood glucose control. With less progesterone, there may be greater insulin sensitivity and with less estrogen insulin resistance increases, and the lack of these hormones can also cause other changes which can worsen diabetes complications. For example, lowered estrogen levels increase the risks of cardiovascular disease, which is already higher for people who have diabetes, and osteoporosis.

Many symptoms are attributed to menopause, and the most common are hot flashes, disturbed sleep, night sweats and the decreased ability to think clearly. Both menopause and diabetes produce similar symptoms. Some mistake menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, moodiness etc as the symptoms of low blood sugar, so that they incorrectly assume these symptoms are a result of low blood sugar and start consuming unnecessary calories which in turn raises the blood sugar and in advertently cause a surge in blood sugar

Because of diabetes women experience stronger and more frequent episodes of low blood sugar especially at night. This may affect their sleep, already interrupted by menopause associated with hot flashes and night sweats. Such sleep deprivation causes fluctuations in blood sugar.

In order to combat this women choose to take hormone replacement therapy or HRT.These hormones (estrogen and progesterone) replace the hormones that the body no longer make. But this will not be possible in the case of women if she is a diabetic as these hormones affect the blood sugar. But these doses with HRT are so low and they do not cause much effect. In that case the diabetic medicine needs to be adjusted also .If the woman is exposed to these hormones it has benefits like

Protect the heart

Protect the bones from the loss of calcium which can lead to brittle bones.

Eliminate the symptoms such as hot flashes (which are easy to confuse with hypoglycemia) helps to sleep and think more easily.

Complications of Menopause

Majority of women will experience this complication but the intensity may vary within each women

Irregular bleeding

Hot flushes

Vaginal thinning and dryness

Osteoporosis

Heart diseases

Menopause is complete when you have not menstruated for 12 months. Women with type 1 diabetes experience menopause earlier than average. Women with type 2 diabetes may go through menopause later than average if they are above a healthy weight, as estrogen levels do not decrease as rapidly in women who are overweight.

This is one of the major problems in many women as they gain weight and become less active during this time, which compounds blood glucose control difficulties. So it is vitally important to plan a nutritious, low fat diet with calcium supplements if needed and physical activity. As these measures will lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by keeping the cholesterol level low and protect the bones against the thinning of osteoporosis.
Regular exercise benefits the heart and bones, help to regulate weight, contributes to a sense of overall well-being and improvement in mood. Sedentary women are far more prone to coronary heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and osteoporosis. They also suffer from chronic back pain, stiffness, insomnia, and irregularity. Depression is also a problem. Therefore exercise plays an important and beneficial role as it circumvent these problems and also achieve higher HDL cholesterol levels.

The Benefits of regular exercise

Increases circulation, and improves the regulation of body temperature.

Improves weight control by increasing basal metabolic rate and lean body mass.

Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by strengthening the circulatory system, lowering blood pressure and maintaining a healthier blood cholesterol level.

Increases strength and range of movement.

Elevates your mood and controls stress.

 Reduces the likelihood of osteoporosis.

Some suggestions that may reduce the discomforts of menopause:

1.Eat well balanced meals that forms the basis for managing the diabetes

2.Cutting out caffeine which may help to reduce hot flashes.

3.Consuming more legumes and soy products which decreases the discomforts associated with menopause as these foods contain phytoestrogen (plant estrogen.

4.Last but not the least being physically active may help to increase energy levels and give you a mental lift.

Therefore menopause is an important phase in womens life where she undergoes a lot of physical changes. The body goes through changes that can affect her social life, her feelings about herself, and functioning at work. Till recently menopause was often surrounded by misconceptions and myths, but it is a natural; step in the process of aging. So one should accept menopause and age gracefully for "As a white candle in a holy place so is fine beauty of an aged face."

Menopause Treatments and your Diet

by Caren Killtral

For any woman that has suffered the horrible effects of menopause, there is some welcome news on the horizon. In the popular press, there has been a lot of talk about the potential of soy as a treatment for the effects of menopause. While some studies have suggested that soy is not the all-natural solution women have been waiting for, recent studies have shown that the regular consumption of soy can indeed help alleviate the symptoms of menopause.

Soy contains a number of ingredients that have been proven beneficial for optimal health. It has been suggested that the protease inhibitors found in soy could play a critical role in preventing cancer. Soy is extremely high in compounds known as isoflavonoids, which have shown great promise in lowering the risk for osteoporosis and heart disease. This is generally attributed to the biological similarity between isoflavonoids and estrogen.

The general consensus seems to be that ingesting 30-40 grams of soy per day can have a dramatic effect on one's health. In some studies, soy has been known to lower cholesterol levels by 15 to 20 percent. A recent study conducted in Asia suggests that North American women suffer the effects of menopause significantly more often than women in Asia. Scientists have attributed this to the fact that women throughout Asia consume significantly more Soy products in their diet.

While it may seem like a daunting prospect, there are some simple and effective ways to include Soy in your diet. Soy milk, tofu, roasted soy nuts, and soy flour are some of the most popular soy-based foods. Tofu is simply wonderful, if the proper steps are taken to prepare it. Simply cut it into cubes, and allow it to marinade in soy sauce and fresh herbs for a few hours.

Once the marinade is complete, mix some soy flour and yeast flakes in a bowl and add the tofu cubes. Be sure the cubes are well covered, and then you can pan fry them with a bit of olive oil. Crispy fried tofu is a wonderfully healthy dish that is sure to please everyone in your family. Eat right! Eat healthy! And when it comes to dealing with menopause, just keep on keeping on. Things will get better!

Menopause - Heavy Bleeding

by Michael Russell

One of the symptoms of peri-menopause is heavy bleeding. Heavy bleeding is thought to be caused by lower levels of progesterone compared to estrogen during the anovulatory cycles. It can also be caused by fibroids, which are benign tumors found in the uterus. It should be checked out if it lasts for longer than a month or two or more than just slightly heavier than usual.

In terms of lifestyle changes for alleviating this symptom exercise is said to help. In addition you need to make sure you get enough iron along with drinking plenty of fluids.

For alternative treatment methods, you can try acupuncture but there are no studies that prove it will have a benefit. Herbs can be used as a treatment, specifically those that act like progesterone or increase the levels of it. Those herbs are Vitex (Chaste Tree), Lady's Mantle, Flaxseed and Wild Yam Root. Vitex was shown in studies to be effective in normalizing the hormonal cycles and increase levels of progesterone and estrogen in addition to shrinking fibroids. Lady's Mantle is used to prevent very heavy bleeding known as flooding, as is flaxseed But too much flaxseed can cause cramping, so beware. Wild Yam Root is helpful because many of the synthetic hormonal treatments are made from Wild Yam. Homeopathic remedies are lachesis, sepia, belladonna and secale. You should seek guidance on homeopathic remedies from a homeopathic practitioner.

There are several options available that involve drugs or surgery. Low doses of oral contraceptives have been show in studies to reduce blood loss by 50 percent. A IUD can be an option because it releases progesterone and is thought to work well on women with fibroids. And something as simple as ibuprofen in high doses has been shown to reduce the instance of heavy bleeding up to 40 percent. Hormones are not a very effective option. Usually after fibroids and polyps are ruled out, you will take a progesterone like Provera to stimulate a period to get your lining to shed. Lupron is another drug which can be used - puts you into a temporary menopause by inhibiting the hormones from the hypothalamus. This is usually a last option before surgery.

Sometimes heavy bleeding can be treated with a D&C, also know as dilation and curettage. Other surgical options include an endometrial ablation. 50 percent of all women that have this procedure never have another period again. As a last resort, a hysterectomy can be performed. This is a major surgery, so the decision to have one should not be taken lightly. One must consider carefully all the benefits and risks, including the decision to remove the ovaries. Usually just the removal of the uterus is enough to stop the bleeding, so unless you want to enter instant abrupt menopause, you may want to keep them - usually women will go into menopause about two years early after having the uterus removed.

How Physical Therapy for Osteoporosis Helps

by Milos Pesic

Osteoporosis affects millions of people and is the second biggest health problem worldwide. Osteoporosis is the condition wherein the bones lose mass and the bone tissues deteriorate. Osteoporosis makes bones thin, fragile, and highly susceptible to fractures.

How does osteoporosis occur? The body continuously eliminates and creates bone cells. As a person grows old, usually starting in the 30s, the bodys process of creating bone cells becomes slower than the process of removing them resulting in a great deficit in bone mass. In addition to aging, other factors that make a person at risk of osteoporosis are smoking, sedentary lifestyle, early menopause, and family history.

Known as a silent disease, osteoporosis manifests itself only when the condition is already serious. Most people who suffer from osteoporosis had no idea they had the disease until they experience a fracture or severe pain in the back. What most people are not aware of is you can prevent this disease early in life through exercise and daily calcium intake.

For those at risk of developing osteoporosis or already diagnosed with it, physical therapy for osteoporosis is one of the best ways to fight this disease. Many qualified physical therapists specialize in the treatment of osteoporosis. Physical therapy for osteoporosis begins with a thorough physical evaluation where the therapist identifies restrictions, imbalances and, specifically, what activities and movements the patient is capable of or is limited to doing. The evaluation serves as the basis for the creation of a customized physical therapy program

Physical therapy for osteoporosis patients without a fracture includes strengthening exercises and resistance exercises intended to increase bone mass and make bone-supporting muscles stronger to help prevent fractures. To ease the stress on your bones, your physical therapist will also teach you about body balance, body mechanics and posture. Your therapist will also work with you to find out if there are any risks to you at home and at work such as specific activities that can lead to bone fracture.

Physical therapy for osteoporosis patients suffering a fracture involves specific exercises and other treatment methods designed for pain relief and bone strengthening as well as prevention of fractures in the future.

In addition to exercises, physical therapy for osteoporosis may also include massage, manual therapy, exercises such as Pilates, tai chi and yoga and heat and cold therapies for pain management.

Physical therapy for osteoporosis seeks to strengthen bones, increase flexibility and manage pain. It also increases the patients awareness of the body and develops responsibility for their own health.

Hair Loss and Menopause

by Josh Riverside

Women with menopause are prime candidates for hair loss. Statistics show that about 50 percent of women experience some hair loss while going through menopause, and about 66 percent worry about thinning hair or bald spots during post-menopausal stages. This is a natural stage in a woman?s life that starts between the age of 30 and 70 but typically starts during the mid 40s or mid 50s. Symptoms of menopause usually manifest themselves about three months after a woman enters the stage.

The exact cause of hair loss in women is not clear to medical researchers, but they have linked it closely to the reduced production of female hormones, estrogen, which leads to androgenetic alopecia. A woman also naturally produces testosterone, which is the male hormone. But before she enters menopause, the level of testosterone produced by the body is kept in check by estrogen. As she enters menopause, the higher level of testosterone combines with an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase. The combination of these two substances creates dihydrotestosterone or DHT. When DHT reaches the hair follicles, the woman starts to experience hair loss.

Anemia, thyroid disorders, fungal infections, and stress can also cause hair loss in a woman who is in menopause.

Estrogenic treatments, such as soy isoflavones or hormone replacement therapies can be taken in an attempt to remedy the problem. Just as the symptoms take 3 months to show any manifestation, treatments would need to be taken for about 3 months to determine if it is working or not.

Though it may not seem evident, women may experience hair loss just as much as men, but the effects are not the same. It is very rare for a woman to have bald spots; hair loss usually produces a thinning effect, which makes styling very challenging.

How a woman reacts to hair loss differs from one to another. It may cause her to feel less feminine, which can lead to depression and, in severe cases, anxiety. If conditions lead to deterioration in quality of life, it is recommended that professional assistance is sought to address the problem.

Some tips for women experiencing hair loss: cut the hair in short layers as this adds more fullness and body; use soft brushes instead of combs; using mousse or gel instead of hair spray can add body to the hair without harming it.
